ABOUT
UKRAINE

Did you know?

Ukraine is a country in Eastern Europe. It is the second-largest European country after Russia, which borders it to the east and northeast. It also borders Belarus to the north; Poland, Slovakia, and Hungary to the west; and Romania and Moldova to the southwest; with a coastline along the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov to the south and southeast. Kyiv is the nation's capital and largest city, followed by Kharkiv, Dnipro and Odesa. Ukraine's official language is Ukrainian; Russian is also widely spoken, especially in the east and south.

During the Middle Ages, Ukraine was the site of early Slavic expansion and the area later became a key centre of East Slavic culture under the state of Kievan Rus', which emerged in the 9th century. The state eventually disintegrated into rival regional powers and was ultimately destroyed by the Mongol invasions of the 13th century. The area was then contested, divided, and ruled by a variety of external powers for the next 600 years, including the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, the Austrian Empire, the Ottoman Empire, and the Tsardom of Russia. The Cossack Hetmanate emerged in central Ukraine in the 17th century marked on maps as "Ukraine, land of the Cossacks", but was partitioned between Russia and Poland, and ultimately absorbed by the Russian Empire. Ukrainian nationalism developed and, following the Russian Revolution in 1917, the short-lived Ukrainian People's Republic was formed. The Bolsheviks consolidated control over much of the former empire and established the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, which became a constituent republic of the Soviet Union when it was formed in 1922. In the early 1930s, millions of Ukrainians died in the Holodomor, a human-made famine. The German occupation during World War II in Ukraine was devastating: 7 million Ukrainian civilians were killed, including most Ukrainian Jews.

Ukraine gained independence in 1991 as the Soviet Union dissolved, and declared itself neutral. A new constitution was adopted in 1996. A series of mass demonstrations, known as the Euromaidan, led to the establishment of a new government in 2014 after a revolution. Russia then unilaterally annexed Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula, and pro-Russian unrest culminated in a war in the Donbas between Russian-backed separatists and government forces in eastern Ukraine. Since the outbreak of war with Russia, Ukraine has continued to seek closer ties with the United States, European Union, and NATO. Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Ukraine is a unitary state and its system of government is a semi-presidential republic. A developing country, it is the poorest country in Europe by nominal GDP per capita and corruption remains a significant issue. However, due to its extensive fertile land, pre-war Ukraine was one of the largest grain exporters in the world. It is a founding member of the United Nations, as well as a member of the Council of Europe, the World Trade Organization, and the OSCE. It is in the process of joining the European Union and has applied to join NATO.

WHAT KIND OF PAPERWORK DO WE NEED TO GET MARRIED IN UKRAINE?

Here are some key points to consider:

  1. Legal Requirements: Both parties must meet the legal requirements for marriage in Ukraine, which typically include being of legal age, being unmarried, and having the legal capacity to marry.

  2. Documentation: Tourists must provide certain documents, such as valid passports, birth certificates, and possibly a Certificate of No Impediment (CNI) or similar document from their home country stating that they are free to marry. These documents may need to be translated into Ukrainian and legalized or apostilled, depending on the regulations.

  3. Residency Requirement: Ukraine does not have a residency requirement for marriage, so tourists can typically get married without having to reside in the country for a certain period beforehand.

  4. Civil Ceremony: Marriage in Ukraine is usually performed in a civil ceremony conducted at a registry office (ZAGS). Some couples may also choose to have a religious or symbolic ceremony in addition to the civil one.

  5. Notification: Couples must notify the registry office of their intention to marry in advance and schedule an appointment. This can usually be done in person or through an authorized representative.

  6. Witnesses: Two witnesses are required to be present at the ceremony. These can be friends or family members who are of legal age.

  7. Registration: After the ceremony, the marriage must be registered with the registry office, and the couple will receive a marriage certificate.

What is a UKRAINIAN wedding like?

A Ukrainian wedding is a festive and joyous occasion, rich in tradition, culture, and symbolism. Here's what you can expect at a traditional Ukrainian wedding:

  1. Pre-Wedding Rituals: Ukrainian weddings often begin with pre-wedding rituals and celebrations, including the "svatannya" (matchmaking) where the groom's family formally asks for the bride's hand in marriage, and the "vistup" (public announcement) where the engagement is officially announced.

  2. Wedding Attire: The bride typically wears a white gown adorned with intricate embroidery or beadwork, while the groom wears a formal suit or traditional Ukrainian attire, such as a "vyshyvanka" (embroidered shirt) and "sharovary" (baggy trousers). Guests often dress in their finest attire as well.

  3. Ceremony: Ukrainian weddings usually involve both civil and religious ceremonies. The civil ceremony is conducted at a registry office (ZAGS), followed by a religious ceremony in a church for couples who are Orthodox Christian. During the ceremony, vows are exchanged, and the couple is blessed by the priest.

  4. Music and Dancing: Music and dancing are integral parts of Ukrainian weddings, with live bands or DJs providing entertainment throughout the celebration. Traditional Ukrainian folk music, including lively melodies and rhythmic dances like the "hopak," are often performed, and guests join in the dancing with enthusiasm.

  5. Feasting: Ukrainian weddings are known for their abundant feasts, featuring a variety of traditional dishes from Ukrainian cuisine. Guests are treated to a multi-course meal, including appetizers like "salo" (cured pork fat), soups, main courses like "holubtsi" (stuffed cabbage rolls) and "varenyky" (filled dumplings), and desserts like "medovik" (honey cake) and "pampushky" (sweet buns).

  6. Cultural Customs: Various cultural customs are observed during Ukrainian weddings, such as the "bread and salt" welcome ceremony, where the newlyweds are presented with bread, salt, and a goblet of wine as symbols of prosperity, hospitality, and longevity. The couple may also participate in rituals like the "korovai" (wedding bread) ceremony and the "rushnyk" (embroidered towel) ceremony.

  7. Hospitality: Ukrainian hospitality is evident throughout the wedding celebration, with generous servings of food and drinks offered to guests, warm welcomes, and heartfelt gestures of friendship and camaraderie. Family members and friends play an important role in ensuring that everyone feels welcome and included in the festivities.

Overall, a Ukrainian wedding is a joyous and memorable occasion that celebrates love, family, and tradition, bringing together loved ones to create lasting memories in a festive and spirited atmosphere.

  7. LGBTQ+ Weddings: Same-sex couples celebrate their love with weddings that may follow traditional or personalized ceremonies, depending on their preferences. LGBTQ+ weddings highlight inclusivity and equality in marriage.

  8. Micro Weddings: In intimate gatherings with a small guest list, micro weddings prioritize quality time with loved ones over the scale of the event. They often involve fewer than 50 guests and can be more budget-friendly and personalized.

  9. Multicultural Weddings: Couples from different cultural backgrounds blend their traditions and customs to create a unique wedding experience that honors both of their heritages. These weddings celebrate diversity and foster cultural exchange.

  10. Virtual Weddings: In response to circumstances such as the COVID-19 pandemic, couples may choose to host virtual weddings, where guests participate remotely via video conferencing platforms. Virtual weddings enable couples to share their special day with friends and family worldwide while prioritizing safety.

These are just a few examples of the diverse range of weddings celebrated worldwide, each reflecting the personalities, values, and preferences of the couples involved.
