INTERVIEW

Who are you? Describe yourself in a few words.

We are Barbara and Federico, nice to meet you first of all. We are dreamers, constantly with our heads in the clouds, and honestly, we love living in our own world. We live for human connections, which we consider the greatest wealth available: a wealth of values and opportunities that can be created. We thrive on this. We adore Beauty in all its forms and expressions, but Cinema is the expression that excites us the most and is our greatest source of inspiration in everything we do.

Do you think that creativity involves putting your heart and soul into your work?

There is no creativity without heart and soul, without ourselves. However, creativity needs practice and exercise to be assimilated and to truly become "ours".

What in your personal life has influenced you to choose your career?

Fede: My career has been determined by fate and Life itself. I am the third generation of wedding photographers: my grandfather was a wedding photographer, and my mother was a wedding photographer. Initially, I was not interested in pursuing this career, even though I dealt with the video aspect when I was about twenty years old (but only to earn some money). Then, 12 years ago, my mother fell ill with leukemia in the middle of the wedding season and I had to abandon my studies and current interests to take care of her and to fulfill the emergency commitments and engagements. From that moment, something clicked inside me that made me fall in love with photography and what I could do with it, what I could tell through it. Meeting Barbara and growing together within this world made me even more connected to all of this.

Barby: I encountered Photography while attending the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. Initially, I considered it a lesser art compared to painting, sculpture, and other artists who had influenced my school education. However, my opinion on photography began to change thanks to a film course I took. I started to become passionate about visual language, communication through images, lights, and colors, and the stories and emotions that could be conveyed. It was a revelation for me, and I realized that I needed to reevaluate my beliefs. In that delicate moment of transition, I met Federico and together we discovered the power of photography.

What is creativity to you? Do you consider yourself to be creative? Why or why not?

Creativity, in our opinions, is the essence of everything we do, whether it's photography or cooking. It's something spontaneous, a spark that ignites you, wakes you up, and makes you realize that you need to try something different, you need to go down that path even if it's rough, even if no one has ever taken it. It's not easy to explain, it's like trying to explain a color to a blind person. It's something ancient, ancestral, that lives inside you, dormant but can burn and ignite if necessary. Creativity goes hand in hand with Passion, one depends on the other inevitably. Passion makes you curious, makes you active, makes you ask questions, and makes you experiment. These are actions and processes that lead to creativity. We, photographers, are creative, we think that's the only label we deserve and proudly display. We are not "artists," "reporters," "magazines", "destination," or "luxury" ... these labels serve different purposes and deviate from the concept of photography in its purest form. We are creative through and through and no one can argue with that. I consider myself a creative, with its ups and downs :)

If you had the chance to live during a different artistic movement other than now, which one would you choose?

La Belle Époque in France is considered one of the most elegant and aesthetically beautiful periods of all time. It would be a dream to be able to live for an hour in Paris between the 1800s and 1900s, breathing in that atmosphere (a bit like in Woody Allen's film Midnight in Paris).

Do you believe in destiny?

We firmly believe in Destiny, as we mentioned, we are dreamers :) But besides that, the most important choices and events in our lives seem to be Destiny's jokes, and we cannot ignore them.

What inspires you on a daily basis?

We try to nourish ourselves and surround ourselves with the most stimulating things possible, avoiding negativity and toxicity in content as much as possible. We’re fascinated by the stories of ordinary people, how two people met and fell in love. We also enjoy everyday life stories, when we talk about normal things with our friends and they tell us anecdotes about what happened to them at work, etc. From an expressive and visual point of view, cinema (we have our preferences, but we never exclude anything in advance) always inspires us a lot.

Do you ever create hidden meanings or messages in your work? Explain.

Oh yes, absolutely yes. Or at least we try, it's not always easy, and it doesn't always work out, but when it happens, it's pure delight for me. We’re obsessed in our Stories with the number two, telling love stories between two people is something that recurs cyclically and that we unconsciously seek during the shot. Symbolism is something that fascinates us a lot and that we’re trying to delve into in this recent period.

After these years of working on your craft, do you still feel the joy of doing what you do?

After these years of working on your craft, do you still feel the joy of doing what you do? Being a photographer is not just any job, you don't say "I work as a photographer from 9 to 5, I clock in and then I'm done being one." Being a photographer is a lifestyle choice. You see as a photographer, you think as a photographer, you live your life in relation to photography, and your life consequently influences your photography. Photography is a travel companion that stays with you from the moment you decide it should, you grow with it. How can we ever be tired of this job? It would mean being tired of living photography. There are ups and downs (not every day in anyone's life is the same, right?), and it's normal for it to be that way. There are aspects we love more and aspects we love less about this job, and that's also normal. The real challenge is always finding new inspiration and renewing yourself, but I prefer to say "The real challenge is to grow," your photography will grow with you.

What do you intend to achieve through your work?

We like to think of our work as a means, as a passion that allows us to live our lives. We absolutely don't want to live just to work, but we desire to enjoy the fruits of our efforts. "Success" for us means living our lives in tranquility thanks to the work we love. This may seem unambitious to someone, but for us, it has an invaluable value like true wealth.
