“Pyry’s photographs translate moments into memories that will take you back not just into the moment but also to how you felt then and there.”

Architect turned into a photographer, aesthetics run deep in my blood. My style is genuine, modern, and chic with a warm touch of nostalgia. The main emphasis of my work is on the documentation, the true story, and true people, while my portraiture work has influences from both fashion and editorial photography. Published on Vogue and selected as Rangefinde’s Rising Star of Wedding Photography in 2021.

Based in Helsinki but always on the move. I photograph weddings around Europe from spring to fall in Latin America during the winter time.

INTERVIEW

WHO ARE YOU?
DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN A FEW WORDS.

A thirty-something young, photographer with an architect’s eye and degree, curiosity-led, born into a travel-loving artist family (personally over 50 countries and counting), family and friends first mentality, books/plants/movies/art/food/music/sailing/podcasts-lover, feet on the ground - head in the clouds, social introvert. A few possible ways to describe me, all falling short of the whole truth.

HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE REMEMBERED?

I like to think in terms of how am I seen by my closest and by the people I work with. I think that’s more important than being remembered in a certain way. Life is more important than making a life eternal but the beauty is that today you can have both.

DO YOU BELIEVE IN DESTINY?

Yes and no. Until there’s proof of destiny and such forces I’ll probably always doubt them, but I’ve had unexplainable coincidences happen to me so many times that there’s really no other way to explain them. I guess it’s a part of this mystery we call life.

WHEN DID YOU REALIZE
THAT YOU ARE A CREATIVE PERSON?

I was born into an artist family so I haven’t known life without creativity. It’s what I live for and it’s what I breathe and eat. I believe everyone’s creative in different ways. I also think that creativity is something that we share, we stand on the shoulders of giants and could never come up with all our creations without the work and development of our ancestors.

DOES YOUR WORK CONVEY
A SPECIFIC EMOTION OR MESSAGE?

I try to convey the whole bunch of the emotions and messages that I witness during the weddings. On a wedding day, I hope to capture the moments and emotions in an authentic way that appreciates the beauty of that moment. I hope that through my photographs the wedding couple can return to their special day and not just to its moments but also to the emotions they had that day, to sense what they sensed, to live again what they lived.

HAVE YOU ALWAYS WANTED
TO DO WHAT YOU ARE DOING?

I’ve always been fascinated with stories. Some of my best memories as a kid are of reading, hiding under the guest room bed to read Lord of The Rings in torchlight. I also used to write a lot and for a long time, I aspired to be an author. That’s until I got my first camera in high school and found a way to tell stories with images.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

I’m inspired by movies, art, and books, definitely traveling and walking in the cities and marketplaces, witnessing different cultures and how people act and socialize. I’m inspired by people and discussions, letting creativity flow and throwing out ideas, dreaming I guess. I’m inspired by everyday objects and the passing of time, symbolism, and rituals. In short, I’m inspired by everything that evokes a sense of a story and imagination.
