‘Ethereal movie-like imagery with people and the environment at its core’

I am an outdoorsy soul with a crush on all things music, cinema, and art.

I’m based in Scotland and work with couples on Weddings and Elopements all over Europe, from the Mountain ridges to the city streets.

I tread with a light footprint, observing, documenting, and laying down these images as authentically as possible

I’m drawn as much to the fleeting gestures, the quiet unseen looks, and the subtle vignettes as I am to the epic, sweeping vistas and pockets of light that I forever chase.

I’m still fascinated by this craft, learning about people and their families and chiseling out visual stories for them that I hope will serve well for generations to come.

I’m lucky enough to have been named Top 50 UK photographer in 2022

INTERVIEW

If you had the chance to live during a different artistic movement other than now, which one would you choose?

I love the Renaissance period but I would love to have lived in Barbizon, France, during the mid-1800s (the Barbizon School). Mixing with the realist painters, the poets, and the writers of that day in that wee village. It must have been an incredible melting pot of creativity (and wild parties!).

How would you like to be remembered?

A good Son, Dad, partner, friend and an honest, kind, open and inquisitive man. A decent enough photographer so as to have made a long career, created well, made couples happy and paid the bills.

Do you believe in destiny?

I believe in hard work and being in the right place at the right time.

What inspires you on a daily basis?

Nature, light, music, books.

Who do you define as a visionary?

Satoshi Nakamoto.Orwell. Leonardo Da Vinci.

What made you decide to follow a creative career choice (though possibly risky) rather than something more stable?

I knew in my teens I wanted to follow music or photography as a career and there were not many 9-5 jobs in that sphere! My desire to have a creative job overrides any fear of stability.

When was the first time that you remember realizing that you are a creative person:

I am not sure I really ever thought about it deeply but when I was writing songs and drawing in my early teens my friends commented that I was good at making things. I always had a camera (my Dad was a keen photographer and had his own darkroom) and from the age of 17 and would always be experimenting and shooting portraits and street work. At that age I thought everyone was like that, I hung out with a lot of musicians so it felt normal to want to make things, music, artwork or photos.

After these years of working on your craft, do you still feel the joy of doing what you do?

Yes, at times I feel more joy as I can create images closer to what I feel and see in my mind than when I was still trying to figure out the technical part. I still love to experiment, though, and I still find dead-ends, but these give me just as much joy as I like to problem-solve and see where things go.

Is there a particular place where you feel most creative?

I love nature, woodland, mountains, and quiet places but I probably feel most creative when visiting a new city, the movement, the buzz and the unfamiliar surroundings all seem to fire up the creative muscles.

Is it difficult to maintain your level of knowledge? What do you do to improve it?

I try to stay interested in photography across many genres and time periods, I read and watch documentaries on the craft and for wedding work I attend workshops. I like to learn from younger photographers as much as I do from the masters.
