Os Pixel

We are Zé (myself), Luísa and João (my brother). Luísa and I have been together for 25 years and have two beautiful, free-spirited kids.

Our journey in Os Pixel began back in 2011. Back then, both of us had full time jobs totally unrelated to photography or video. After we did a homemade video about our backpack travel to Southeast Asia, a casual and unthinkable chain of events lead us to film a wedding. Several months later we were quitting our jobs and now, over 12 years later, here we are!

We do believe that getting in the wedding business totally unware of how it worked, shaped us and our work, not paying any attention in what was done, therefore we only had one thing in mind: try to capture the raw emotions, the genuine connections, and the fleeting moments that make each occasion special. We always create from the heart and try to allow the client to relive the event and feel the emotions as if they were right there again. Unstaged, raw, emotional, unique as it was and as its imagery should be.

INTERVIEW

Who are you? Describe yourself in a few words.

We are Zé (myself), Luisa, and João (my brother). Luisa and I have been together for 25 years and have two beautiful, free-spirited kids. Our story is a blend of contrasts and complements.
Luisa is a perfectionist, a list-maker, methodical, and organized.
On the other hand, Luisa keeps saying I'm chaotic, I'm all around and yet organized in my disorganization and a free spirit with a childlike heart. And João, my bother, I guess he's the middle term and our equilibrium, he's always there, he always delivers. We are all similar in a way, yet so different. This is what makes us individuals and that’s what we want to emphasize on our work - individuality.

Do you think that creativity involves putting your heart and soul into your work?

Sure, there's no other way to do that. That's the place it comes from.

What is creativity to you? Do you consider yourself to be creative? Why or why not?

Creativity is all about following your instincts. It's a way of expression of something that sets your soul on fire... I really can't say if I consider myself creative but I am curious and I think that curiosity bonds so strongly with creativity.

How would you like to be remembered?

We would like to be remembered as a cool couple and the best parents our boys could ever have. That would be enough just for itself. But the thought of being remembered for something we create is very warming as well.

After these years of working on your craft, do you still feel the joy of doing what you do?

Yes, it's an ongoing process, always.

Have you always wanted to do what you are doing?

No... I had no idea whatsoever that doing what we do would be possible as a career... I grew up in a countryside village and art was never regarded as a way of living, it was nonexistent, so I grew up with this abstraction... but at the same time with this fascination about photography and being able to keep something from the past still visible. Randomly (and there's a nice story behind it) here we are now living our best lives... If 10 years ago someone told me that our lives would have taken this beautifully unexpected turn I would never believed it.

What do you intend to achieve through your work?

Both Self-expression and Satisfaction. Well, actually it is much more, we just really do things that we like to do, it's a way of living.

Do your work and approach have changed?

Yes, they did, and there is no question about it. The world keeps moving to all of us, so we embrace change. The challenge is keeping pace and yet staying true to yourself (who knows if that's what pushes you further in the end).

What is your mission in this life?

Pursue happiness and keep making people happy, especially my people, our people. Aside from that, we keep on making the past alive in a way, and this is priceless.

Is it difficult to maintain your level of knowledge? What do you do to improve it?

Again, if you keep yourself curious I do think improvements and new ways of passing on a message shall come to you naturally. If you absolutely love to do what you do, you will only get better on your own craft.
